Sunday 7th August
Touristy day today. Heading off into the Daintree area. Rainforest country.
At one point, the road up to Cape Tribulation isn't. It's a ferry.
Our timing for once was spot on and we managed to more or less drive straight on.
The Daintree River that is |
First stop for the day, the Daintree Discovery Centre. Beautifully laid out, with boardwalks through the forest floor
and an elevated walkway at the first level of tree tops.
With a tower that gets you higher into the foliage.
Surprisingly, I made it to the top of the tower and the view made it all worthwhile
Is that what they call a nervous smile Steve? |
Don't look down Don't look down! |
Cassowary are very big up here Literally |
So are the butterflies |
The drive on towards Cape Tribulation is once again spectacular. Rainforest right up the road, and in places the Coral Sea lapping at the side of the road too.
The whole scene is straight off a tropical island, it's hard to believe this is mainland Australia.
Lunch today is on the beach in an idyllic tropical paradise. Cheese and vegemite sandwiches of course, to remind us that this is an Australian tropical paradise.
Amazingly there are a couple of National Park campsites, where you can stay for $5.30 per person on an unpowered site. Right on the beach in beautifully sheltered sites.
Moving on though we had a quick stop at the Cape Tribulation Ice Cream shop, where the special this week is the four flavour tub. Now the apricot I had to pass on but the pineapple was delicious. The other two flavours? Wattleseed and black sapote. I can't describe those two, not that they weren't nice, it's just that they had their own unique flavours. The lady at the shop said black sapote is the chocolate pudding fruit. But that must be for the look, because it didn't taste like chocolate pudding to me.
Back in Mossman for the night we managed to snare the last site at the Riverside caravan Park. In fact I am not sure it was actually a site. We were wedged between a rock (with a dedication plaque on it) and the tables and chairs for the camp BBQ. In fact we had to plug our power lead into the camp BBQ for the night. But at least it put us close to the amenities block.
