Step 95 Bang Bang – Karumba 189 km's

Friday 29th July

Nowhere near as cold overnight, must be those extra few kilometres North we travelled.

Taking advantage of internet and phone reception we discover that Hamish & Andy have stolen our branding and are calling their US trip “Hamish & Andy's Gap Year”. Well they might be on tele, but is their blog as popular?

Proof readers note: Actually it is Steve and they have a twitter account too. They once also managed to get a cardboard box over a thousand “friends” on Facebook. Sorry to burst your bubble.

To get to Karumba we pass through Normanton, which you may or may not know was the inspiration for the title of Nevil Shute's book “A Town Like Alice”. Apparently when Nevil arrived in Normanton men outnumbered women 10 to 1, which was a similar ratio as when Neville was in Alice Springs. Worked out rather well for him because his original idea and working title was “There's not many women out here is there?”

Before checking in to the Gulf Country Caravan Park in the CBD of Karumba
Karumba CBD

we first drove out to Karumba Point and sat looking out to the ocean for the first time in quite a while. A nostalgic moment made all the more so as the last of the marvellous Jean Leary fruit cake was devoured. Don't know how we managed to make it last so long. Well I do actually, there's been a lot of Woolies blueberry muffins consumed along the way as well.

Side story
While sitting at the point we noted the sign which said:
    Warning crocodiles.
Do not clean fish near waters edge
Do not stand to close to the water when fishing
I repeat do you could get eaten here

Consequently we were a little surprised to see this guy standing crotch deep in the water, with a throw net, trying to catch fish.

Seriously  where is a crocodile when you need one?

Having booked in for two nights at the caravan park it took us only about 10 minutes to extend it to three, just to kick back and relax after covering over 2,000 kilometres in six days. (I know, it's not exactly setting distance records but it's been a lot for us compared to the rest of the trip).  To celebrate making such a quick decision we picked up a couple of meat pies from the bakery. Not sure what made us crave meat pies on a thirty degree day but there you go, and so did the pies.

Pretty lazy day really and then we caught up with a few phone calls before wandering down to the river to watch the sun setting behind the trees.

Saturday 30th & Sunday 31st July
A relaxing couple of days as planned, although I did spend quite a bit of time catching up with blog entries. Still managed to go for a dip in the park swimming pool each day and made a couple of new friends.

Saturday we caught up with two other couples for a couple of drinks before heading down to the river to the famous Raptis Bros. fish and chip shop. One of the couples had been there the other night and they were told that there would be an hour and a half wait. When we arrived there were only a few people sitting around so we thought we would be alright. We were wrong. 45 minutes later the meal arrived. Mind you it was very good fish (barra) and chips and Di had the fisherman's basket which calamari and prawns as well. (But no basket). I guess it proves they were freshly cooked. With the time it took I'm thinking it may have been freshly caught as well and it took them a while to catch one.

Taking the edge of the relaxation, I had another fight with the computer trying to get it to work correctly and consistently. Let's just say it's an ongoing struggle. The Mac on the other hand continues to behave itself (touch wood). Caz told me it would.

Deciding that the fish was so nice but the service not so, we dropped into the shop this afternoon and bought a kilo of local prawns and a piece of King Salmon to cook at home. This is the first place on the whole trip that has actually had cheap sea food. So we thought we'd take a little bit of advantage. Di then spent the next hour shelling the prawns! But it was all worth it for the world famous Chili Prawns a la Kendall that we had for dinner.

Got excited about the Hungarian Formula One GP being on tonight. But not on our PCs. At least we got a good result, nice one Jenson.
