Step 102 Mossman – Port Douglas

Monday 8th August
Well this is our shortest travelling day of the trip so far. Unfortunately I am not sure exactly how short because I forgot to reset the trip meter. But it's less than 20 kilometres anyway.

To stretch out the travel time we drove up to the lookout. Another place that has surprised us, Port Douglas is much bigger than we expected. But somehow it has a nice feel to it. Reminds me a bit of Noosa, but unlike Noosa I like this place.
The first caravan park we tried to check into had no vacancies at all (apparently it's peak season up here). Our second choice though turns out to be just as nice. Again, very tropical, nice shaded site, swimming pool and nice new amenities block. Unfortunately no powered sites left but good old MM is good for a couple of days on batteries.

To make up for her dereliction of household duties, Di headed straight off to the laundry to do a couple of loads of washing. Getting back in time to make my lunch. As I finish writing those last couple of sentences I feel they may come back to haunt me.

After lunch we jumped on the local shuttle bus and headed in to town to check out the sights. It's a typical, trendy, holiday town. Lot's of tourist shops, lots of coffee shops, lots of restaurants and lots of clothes shops. Di loves this place too.
If we had these herbs we would all be as happy as Herb
The marina complex was beautifully laid out and some of the restaurants had some very reasonable happy hour specials. But, this time, we didn't take advantage of them. We did manage to pick up a birthday present for Shantelle, but don't tell her ;-)
Just the odd couple of million bucks worth
At the end of the main street is the beach. A good old fashioned tropical beach. Palm trees down to the sand, coconuts on the beach. Sensational.

Back at the caravan park sipping away at wine o'clock we are visited by the Census man. That's right tomorrow night's the night. Census night. So as not to waste the pleasure of the moment, we file the form away for completion tomorrow.

In a bit of misunderstanding with our previous stocktake the cupboard is a little bare. But thanks to years of watching TV cooking shows and reading recipes in New Idea & Womans Day Steve saves the day with a chicken stir fry and fried rice masterpiece. Take a bow.

Tuesday 9th August
A late and lazy morning this morning but eventually I got motivated enough to try and catch up on the blog. Luckily the inverter (that we use to power the laptop when we have no power from the caravan park) has survived being soaked in water that has leaked onto it from a plastic bottle.

Given our experiences with finding accommodation over the last couple of days we also booked ahead for two nights in Cairns.

In the afternoon we take advantage of the beautiful weather and proximity to the sea and walk down to the beach and stroll blissfully along the sand. We are definitely coming back here.
Incidentally the sea water is actually warmer than the last half a dozen swimming pools we have been in.
Some European fashions should just not be imported!
Eventually the anticipation becomes too much and we rush back to the park to fill in the census form. Half way through I begin to think that the questions have been phrased specifically to get me, and/or Di, in trouble. I can't say specifically which questions got me in trouble but suffice it to say Di disagreed with some of my answers. She on the other hand wanted to put down that sometimes, like when I get home from long lunches, she has to help me with physical and communication tasks. Anyway for the next five years we will be on record as being unemployed gypsies.
